There is a surprising amount of free information readily available when assessing the initial suitability of potential building plot.
Whilst you may not have the in-depth knowledge to fully interpret the information you find there are a few quick wins (or risks avoided/to be allowed for in your feasibility costs).
Visit the free resources included in the above categories to learn as much as you can about the potential land.
As a general rule you should always aim to collect as much information on the site as possible – other people may charge you for the privilege of finding it and you can always seek some up-front guidance from specialists based on the desk-top studies prior to putting in an offer on the land. This up-front work will separate you from the average self-builder and may just prevent you buying a money pit!
